Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions. Here you’ll find answers to the most common ones. If you’re still unsure or want to talk things through, please reach out.

  • I am not an in-network provider, but many clients are able to get some reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. I’ll provide you with a monthly superbill to submit to your insurance company.

  • To check your out-of-network benefits, contact your insurance provider by calling the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card. Many insurers also offer Live Chat support on their websites.

When you reach out, ask the following questions:

    1. Does my plan include out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy?
If so, let them know the billing codes that may apply: 90791 for the initial intake session, 90834 for a 45-minute individual session, and/or 90847 for couples therapy.

    2. What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?
Some plans cover a percentage of the total fee - for example, 60%. That means that if the session fee is $250, they would reimburse $150 per session.

    3. Is there a maximum allowed amount (fee cap) for reimbursement?
For instance, your plan might reimburse 60% of a fee up to $200 - in that case, you'd get $120 back, even if the session costs more.

    4. What is my out-of-network deductible?
This is the amount you need to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance starts reimbursing. It can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.

    5. How much of my out-of-network deductible have I already met?
For example, if your deductible is $1,000 and you’ve already spent $500, you’d need to spend another $500 before reimbursement begins.

    6. What is my policy period?
This helps you know when your deductible resets - usually it’s the calendar year, but some plans follow a different 12-month cycle.

    7. How do I submit claims for reimbursement, and how long do I have to do so?
Ask whether you’ll need to submit claims yourself, what documentation is required, and the deadline for submitting.

  • Individual session (45 minutes): $250

    Couples/relationship session (60 minutes): $300

  • I offer a limited number of sliding scale fees based on financial need. If you'd like to discuss a sliding scale fee, please let me know in your inquiry email.

  • I accept all major credit cards, cash transfer apps (e.g., Venmo, Zelle), personal checks, ACH bank transfer/direct debit, and HSA/FSA cards.

  • Sessions must be canceled or rescheduled at least 48 hours in advance of our session time. If you need to cancel within 48 hours, you will be responsible for paying the full session fee.

  • I offer both in-person and virtual sessions based on clients’ preferences and needs. In-person sessions are in Brooklyn Heights. For virtual sessions, clients must be located in New York State. Reach out to me to discuss scheduling and availability.

  • Individual sessions are 45 minutes, while couples sessions are 60 minutes. Sessions are weekly unless we determine together that a different cadence makes sense for you.

  • The best way to get started is to schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation. On that call, we’ll discuss your needs, scheduling, fees, my approach, and answer any questions you have.

If you have questions before booking a consult, you can email me at sarah@sarahkaufmantherapy.com or using the form on my Contact page.

If I can’t accommodate for whatever reason, I’d be happy to provide a referral.
